About Taste of Humanity

Taste of Humanity is an elegant food, wine & beverage experience benefiting Women for Women International, a non-profit organization helping women survivors of war.

Taste of Humanity will be held on Thursday evening, May 22, 2008, at the oceanfront Del Mar Powerhouse Community Center, from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Tickets are $100 per person. Tickets are limited and must be purchased in advance. Among those enjoying the experience will be local residents and philanthropists passionate about helping these women in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Columbia, Iraq, Kosovo, Nigeria, Rwanda and Sudan.

Taste of Humanity is an international assortment of delectable food sampling stations from five of San Diego’s favorite restaurants. A fabulous assortment of wine will be offered along with tasting of the new modern alternative beverage offered in the four cuisine-inspired flavors of kumquat, lavender, lemon grass and rhubarb. Guests will also enjoy live entertainment, Silent Auction and Silent Raffle opportunities. In addition to delicious food and a beachfront location, guests will enjoy live entertainment by Joaquin Lievano, a Grammy-nominated guitar virtuoso, and silent auction and raffle prizes. Nearly everything has been donated for this event, including flowers from two florists (Magnolia and A Lion in the Sun) and the services of an amazing event planner to help with décor and coordination (La Dolce Idea). All event proceeds go directly to Women for Women International.

Women for Women International is a non-profit organization that provides women survivors of war, civil strife and other conflicts with the tools and resources to move from crisis and poverty to stability and self-sufficiency, thereby promoting viable civil societies.

A horrific rape epidemic is happening to women around the world. For years, women and children across the globe have been and continue to be raped, mutilated, tortured and abused, not just once but repeatedly. Many are taken away and held as sex slaves for months, even years. This is happening in places such as Sudan, Kosovo, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Iraq, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These women have become powerless, ashamed, and humiliated, not to mention physically damaged.

Women for Women International helps these women by giving them a support group, direct aid, rights awareness, leadership education, vocational skills and business training. These services enable women to become active participants in rebuilding their communities and gain back their human dignity.

One of the co-coordinators of this event first heard about this over a year ago when she read an article in the Yoga Journal about the founder of Women for Women International, Zainab Salbi, herself a rape survivor and a remarkable woman. When she learned about this organization, she immediately signed up to be a sponsor sister for a woman survivor. It is $27 a month. $22 of that goes directly to a woman in the program. She exchanged letters with a woman from Kosovo for 1 year. Then she was assigned a new 'sister'. After a year, the women are able to receive micro-credit loans to start businesses to help support themselves and their families.

She decided that she wanted to do something more to help these women who were suffering beyond anything that she could ever imagine. She met Dara Chantarit, President of Keep Del Mar Clean, who organizes an annual local and successful fund raiser and discussed her ideas with her. They decided to co-coordinate a fundraiser together. Their small group (there are 17 women) is passionate about helping these women and are in the process of preparing for their Taste of Humanity fundraiser event.

Within a short time, local businesses were equally inspired and hosted mini-fundraisers, including:

  • The Big Give for Humanity— Chief’s Burgers & Brews, Solana Beach
  • Facials for Humanity— Luminesse Spa, Del Mar Highlands
  • Shop for Humanity— Ryan’s Collections, Del Mar Village, May 9
